The Island of Utila
Útila is also one of its four municipalities. It is located just 30 km from the north coast of Honduras. It has a surface area of 49.3 km², 11 km long and 4 km at its widest point. The only town on the island, called East Harbor, has approximately 3,000 inhabitants.

The official language, as in the rest of Honduras, is Spanish, although English is also spoken, especially for tourist activities.
Touristic attraction

The second largest reef chain in the world extends across the islands of the Bay, where marine life is rich and abundant; this, combined with crystal clear waters and visibility of up to 500 m, makes Útila one of the best places for diving; in addition, it is considered one of the cheapest places in the world to study and obtain diving certification. There are around 12 dive shops or diving schools in Útila to obtain certification,3 ranging from beginner level to the most professional level, and even the master's degree.

As is common in the Caribbean, there are only two climatic seasons: the dry season, between November and May, and the rainy season, the rest of the year, from June to October.

To the west of the island there are many cays, several of which are inhabited and are part of the community of Los Cayos, with a small population. To the east of the island, just 30 km away, is the island of Roatán.

There are two ways to get to Útila: you can get to La Ceiba by land and take the ferry that travels from the islands to the Honduran mainland or you can arrive by air. Among the economic activities of the inhabitants of the island are those related to tourism, fishing and commerce; for this reason, the island has hotel centers that are busy during the holiday season due to its beautiful beaches, reefs and traditional diving, its Anglo-African cultural heritage, with its Creole English, and its carnival in the month of July.

Útila is the most traditional and conservative of the islands in the archipelago, despite the changes it has undergone over the decades since its transfer from the British to the government of Honduras in the 19th century, from being a closed community dedicated to fishing to being one of the most cosmopolitan places in Honduras and developing as one of the best tourist destinations in the Caribbean and being an example of this for the rest of the region.

La Isla de Utila
Útila es, además, uno de sus cuatro municipios. Está localizada a sólo 30 km de la costa norte de Honduras. Tiene 49,3 km² de superficie, 11 km de largo y 4 km en su punto más ancho. El único pueblo de la isla, llamado East Harbour, tiene aproximadamente 3.000 habitantes.

El idioma oficial, como en el resto de Honduras, es el español, aunque también se habla el inglés, sobre todo por las actividades turísticas.
Atractivo turístico

La segunda cadena de arrecife más grande del mundo se extiende a través de las islas de la Bahía, donde la vida marina es rica y abundante; esto, combinado con aguas cristalinas y una visibilidad de hasta 500 m, convierte a Útila en uno de los mejores lugares para buceo; además, se le considera uno de los lugares más baratos del mundo para estudiar y conseguir la certificación de buceo. Existen alrededor de 12 dive shops o escuelas de buceo en Útila para obtener la certificación,3 que van desde el nivel principiante hasta el más profesional, e incluso el máster.

Como es común en el Caribe, existen sólo dos estaciones climáticas: la estación seca, entre noviembre y mayo, y la estación lluviosa, el resto del año, comprendido desde junio hasta octubre.

Hacia el oeste de la isla existen muchos cayos, varios de los cuales están habitados y forman parte de la comunidad de Los Cayos, con una población pequeña. Hacia el este de la isla, a tan sólo 30 km, se encuentra la isla de Roatán.

Existen dos maneras de llegar a Útila: se puede llegar por tierra a La Ceiba y tomar el ferry que viaja de las islas al territorio continental hondureño o se puede arribar por aire. Dentro de las actividades económicas de los habitantes de la isla se encuentran lo relativo al turismo, la pesca y el comercio; para ello la isla cuenta con centros hoteleros que se ocupan en la temporada vacacional debido a sus hermosas playas, sus arrecifes y tradicional buceo, por su herencia cultural anglo-africana, con su inglés criollo, y por su carnaval en el mes de julio.

Útila es la más tradicional y conservadora de las islas del archipiélago, a pesar de los cambios que ha atravesado a lo largo de décadas desde su traspaso de los británicos al gobierno de Honduras en el siglo XIX, de ser una comunidad cerrada y dedicada a la pesca a ser uno de los lugares más cosmopolitas de Honduras y desarrollarse como uno de los mejores destinos turísticos del Caribe y ser ejemplo de ello para el resto de la región.
