Celestun is located at the western end of the state of Yucatán, almost at its limits with the state of Campeche and on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
Around the village, there is the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve where petenes have developed, which extends through Yucatán and Campeche, covering about 600 km2 and is internationally recognized as the winter refuge for thousands of flamingos and many other species of birds.

The ecosystem of Celestún is unique due to the combination of fresh water from the Ría Celestún and salt water from the Gulf of Mexico.
The flamingos of Celestún are of an intense pink color, due to the concentration of carotene in the water; in addition, the reserve is home to several species of birds, including the white pelican and the brown pelican.

Celestún is connected to the mainland by a bridge, from which boat tours depart that navigate the estuary. Among other tourist attractions located in the surroundings, there is also a site called Petrified Forest; there are also several cenotes where it is possible to swim.

Celestún se encuentra unido a tierra firme por medio de un puente, punto del cual parten expediciones turísticas en bote que recorren la ría. Entre otros atractivos turísticos situados en los alrededores, también se encuentra un paraje denominado Bosque Petrificado; hay también varios cenotes en donde es posible nadar.
