Santiago is one of the oldest neighborhoods (1542) in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, located to the west of the historic center. It was the first village of indigenous people that the conquerors encountered upon entering T’hó, the Mayan city on which Mérida was founded, and they named it Santiago in honor of the Patron Saint of Spain.
